## A Symbol of Transylvanian Baroque and the Resilience of Faith The Piarists' Church in Cluj, located at 5 Universității Street, is a historic and spiritual landmark in the religious landscape of Transylvania. Built in the 18th century, it is dedicated to the Holy Trinity and represents the first Catholic church constructed in the region after the Protestant Reformation, marking a crucial step in reaffirming the Roman Catholic presence in the area. It is also the first Baroque-style ecclesiastical building in the province, introducing an innovative architectural language for its time. ## Architecture and Spiritual Treasures The initiative to build the church came from the Jesuit monks, who, starting in 1718, organized an extensive fundraising campaign. The Baroque style, with its curved lines, rich ornamentation, and imposing façade, reflects the European influences of the era, adapted to the local context. The interior houses a remarkable treasure: the icon of the Virgin Mary, painted on wood and encased in metal, which is said to have wept for two weeks in 1699, an event witnessed by numerous observers. Beneath the church lies a crypt with 140 burial places, a testament to the significance of this site for Cluj’s Catholic community. Over time, the building has also witnessed dramatic events, such as the anti-communist protest in 1956, when thousands of Greek Catholic faithful and priests gathered in front of the church to contest the regime’s claims that the Romanian Greek Catholic Church had ceased to exist.
