Despre acest obiectiv
## A Slice of Paradise in the Heart of the Harghita Mountains Red Lake is one of the most picturesque natural destinations in Harghita County, located near the city of Gheorgheni in the Transylvania region. This natural dam lake, formed following a landslide in the 19th century, captivates visitors with its deep blue waters, which contrast spectacularly with the reddish cliffs that give the lake its name. The landscape is completed by the surrounding coniferous forest, offering an exceptionally tranquil and relaxing setting. ## Formation and Natural Features The lake was formed in 1837 when a massive landslide of earth and rocks broke away from the slope of the Great Hășmaș Mountain, blocking the course of the Bicaz River. This natural event led to the accumulation of water, creating a lake with a surface area of approximately 12 hectares and a maximum depth of 10 meters. Its name derives from the reddish hue of the cliffs in the area, rich in iron oxides. The clear, cold waters of the lake reflect the surrounding mountains, while its bed reveals tree trunks preserved over time, adding a unique charm to the landscape. ## Access and Visitor Activities Red Lake is accessible via the national road DN12C, which connects Gheorgheni to Bicaz, and is located approximately 26 kilometers from the city. The area is well-equipped for tourists, featuring parking lots, restaurants, and guesthouses that offer accommodation and local culinary specialties. Visitors can explore the lake by boat or take walks along the marked trails nearby, leading to the Bicaz Gorge or the high peaks of the Hășmaș Mountains. In winter, the area becomes a starting point for snowshoeing hikes or cross-country skiing. Red Lake is an ideal destination for those looking to relax in nature or engage in outdoor sports.
