Despre acest obiectiv
## A Baroque Symbol in the Heart of Timișoara In the historic center of Timișoara, in Liberty Square, stands a testament to 18th-century Baroque art: the Statue of Saint Mary and Saint John of Nepomuk. The monument was erected in 1756 in front of the Old Town Hall, at the initiative of the local Catholic community, during a period when the city was under Habsburg administration. Created in Vienna by sculptors F. Blim and E. Wasserburger, the statue reflects the artistic influences of the Austrian Empire, blending Baroque elegance with profound religious symbolism. ## Architecture and Symbolism of the Ensemble The statue is a remarkable example of Baroque sculpture, characterized by dynamic forms and rich details. The main figures are Saint John of Nepomuk, the patron saint of Catholicism in Banat, and the Virgin Mary, who holds lilies in her hand, a symbol of purity. In the background, Saints Roch, Charles Borromeo, and Sebastian appear, each with distinct significance in Christian iconography. The pedestal of the monument is decorated with three reliefs illustrating key moments in the martyrdom of Saint John of Nepomuk: the confession of Queen Joanna, the interrogation by King Charles, and the canon’s drowning in the Vltava River from Charles Bridge in Prague. ## Visitor’s Guide The monument can be admired in Liberty Square, a central and accessible location that offers the opportunity to explore other historic sites in Timișoara. Although it has been moved several times over the years, today it occupies a well-defined place in the urban landscape and is included on the list of historic monuments. Visitors can appreciate the sculptural details and religious symbolism, as well as the historical context of the era in which it was created. The statue is a point of interest for tourists keen on the cultural and religious heritage of the region, offering an insight into Baroque art and the history of Timișoara.
