Despre acest obiectiv
## A Karst Oasis in the Heart of the Hășmaș Mountains Șugău Gorge is one of the most spectacular mixed-type natural reserves in northeastern Romania, located on the border of Neamț and Harghita counties, within the Hășmaș Mountains. Designated a protected area in 1971 and reconfirmed by Law No. 5/2000, it spans 90 hectares and is part of the Natura 2000 site "Șugău Gorge-Munticelu." The area is partially included in the Cheile Bicazului-Hășmaș National Park, benefiting from strict protection due to its geological, biological, and landscape value. ## A Wild Canyon and Unique Karst Phenomena The heart of the reserve is a wild canyon, 350 meters long, carved by the Șugău stream into Mesozoic limestone. Here, nature has created a dramatic landscape with vertical cliffs, limestone towers and needles, waterfalls, and erosion potholes. The most remarkable feature is the active travertine massif, the largest in the Hășmaș Mountains and one of the most significant in Romania, with an estimated volume of 5,000 cubic meters. Petrifying springs, which continuously deposit calcareous tufa, have also formed a rare cave, Izvorul Șugăului (Șugău Spring Cave), directly carved into the travertine mass. The biodiversity of the area is equally impressive: relict Scots pine forests, mountain meadows, and rocky slopes provide habitat for rare flora and fauna, including the chamois, lynx, and bats. The 17 springs and wetland habitats complete a fragile ecosystem protected by law. ## Access and Visiting Access to Șugău Gorge is via National Road DN12C (Bicaz-Lacu Roșu), at kilometer 34, along a marked trail starting near the Ecolog Cabin. The route, of medium difficulty, crosses limestone cliffs and wet areas, offering spectacular views of the canyon and waterfalls. At the exit from the gorge, visitors can observe a traditional structure called a "ștează," used for washing carpets and clothes. Although the reserve faces anthropogenic pressures (water captations, mining activities), the current custodian—Romanian Mountain Club Piatra Neamț—monitors the area to preserve this natural uniqueness.
