Despre acest obiectiv

## A Medieval Jewel in the Heart of Transylvania The Tărpiu Medieval Church stands as a silent witness to the tumultuous history of the region, being one of the oldest religious monuments in Bistrița-Năsăud County. Although written documents about its origins are scarce, experts place the construction of the building in the 14th-15th centuries, a period when Transylvania experienced intense construction activity under the influence of Gothic architecture. The village of Tărpiu, first mentioned in 1332, was an important stop on the trade routes connecting Transylvania to Moldavia, which explains the presence of a stone church in a rural community. ## Architecture and Constructive Features The building impresses with its simplicity and robustness, characteristic of provincial Transylvanian Gothic. The church is constructed from river stone and brick, with walls up to one meter thick in some places, designed to withstand both time and invasions. The plan is rectangular, with a single nave and a polygonal altar, typical of hall churches from that era. The narrow windows, ending in pointed arches, are decorated with discreet Gothic elements, while the entrance portal retains traces of a ribbed vault. The interior preserves fragments of 15th-century mural paintings, discovered during restoration work. The religious scenes, though deteriorated, reveal influences from the Moldavian school of painting, suggesting cultural ties between the two principalities. The bell tower, added later, is built in the Baroque style, marking a subsequent phase of modernization of the site. ## Short Visitor’s Guide The church is located in the center of Tărpiu village, approximately 20 kilometers northwest of Bistrița, accessible via county road DJ172B. The key is kept by the family living in the adjacent parish house, and visitors are kindly asked to announce their intention to visit the monument in advance. The visiting schedule is flexible, but it is recommended to avoid service hours, especially on Sundays and holidays. Nearby, tourists can explore the picturesque landscapes of the Someșul Mare Valley or make a stop at the Bistrița Citadel, just 30 minutes away. Though less known than other monuments in the area, the Tărpiu Church offers an authentic glimpse into the medieval history of Transylvania, making it a must-visit for heritage and architecture enthusiasts.
