Despre acest obiectiv
## Thick Tower – A Bastion of Sibiu’s History and Art Built in 1540 between Cetății and Corneliu Coposu Streets, the Thick Tower is one of the oldest and most significant defensive structures of medieval Sibiu. Constructed from stone and brick, the tower was part of the city’s fortification system, designed to protect the eastern area of the citadel. Its upper platform once housed cannons, while its walls, over two meters thick, reflect the strategic importance of the building in defending the city. ## From Fortress to Temple of Culture In 1778, the Thick Tower underwent a radical transformation, becoming Sibiu’s first theater. For 161 years, it hosted performances that shaped the city’s cultural life until 1949, when a devastating fire destroyed the building. Reconstruction began in 1990, and today the tower houses Thalia Hall, the headquarters of the Sibiu State Philharmonic. Its architecture blends medieval elements with modern interventions, preserving the historic charm of the original structure. ## Visitor’s Guide The Thick Tower is located in the historic center of Sibiu, at the intersection of Cetății and Corneliu Coposu Streets, and is easily accessible on foot from the Grand Square. Visitors can admire the exterior of the monument, while those interested in cultural events have the opportunity to attend concerts or performances held in Thalia Hall. Although the interior is not permanently open to the public, the events hosted here offer a unique perspective on Sibiu’s architectural and artistic heritage.
