Despre acest obiectiv
## Transylvanian Museum – Guardian of Transylvanian Identity The Transylvanian Museum in Cluj-Napoca is one of the most important cultural institutions dedicated to the historical and ethnographic heritage of Transylvania. Founded in 1859 under the name *Museum of the Transylvanian Association for Romanian Literature and the Culture of the Romanian People (ASTRA)*, the museum was conceived as a center for preserving and promoting Romanian values in the region. The current building, located on Memorandumului Street, was constructed between 1892 and 1895 in the neoclassical style, based on the designs of architect Lajos Pákey. Its imposing façade, featuring Doric columns and a triangular pediment, reflects the prestige of the institution within Cluj’s cultural landscape. ## Collections and Notable Exhibits The museum houses over 400,000 items, organized into sections on history, archaeology, ethnography, art, and natural sciences. Among the most valuable exhibits are the Dacian treasure from Șimleu Silvaniei, medieval documents signed by Transylvanian voivodes, and an impressive collection of glass and wood icons, characteristic of the region. The ethnography section showcases traditional costumes, tools, and household objects, illustrating rural life from the 18th and 19th centuries. Additionally, the museum hosts the ASTRA Library, which contains over 300,000 volumes, including rare manuscripts and first editions. ## Practical Visitor Information The Transylvanian Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM (closed on Mondays). Admission tickets cost approximately 15 lei for adults, with discounts available for students, pupils, and seniors. Visitors can opt for guided tours, available in Romanian, Hungarian, and English, with prior booking. The building is accessible to individuals with disabilities, and the inner courtyard periodically hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events. For a complete experience, it is recommended to allocate at least two hours to explore the collections. The museum is located in Cluj’s historic center, just a 10-minute walk from Union Square.
