Despre acest obiectiv
## Tricule Fortress – A Medieval Sentinel on the Danube Located on the left bank of the Danube, four kilometers downstream from the village of Svinița, Tricule Fortress is one of the medieval fortifications built in the 15th century to defend the region against Ottoman incursions. Its strategic position, at the confluence of water and cliffs, made this complex a key observation and resistance point against the expansion of the Ottoman Empire in southwestern Oltenia. ## Architecture and Constructive Features The fortress consists of three towers positioned at the corners of a hypothetical triangle, of which only two remain visibly intact today. The third tower was almost entirely destroyed by the Danube’s ice floes in the winter of 1924 and now lies submerged beneath the waters. The towers are constructed from Roman bricks, rough stone, and high-quality mortar, elements that have ensured the structure’s resilience over the centuries. The thick walls and compact form reflect the military influences of the era, adapted to the rugged terrain and defensive conditions. ## Access and Visiting Access to the two remaining towers is exclusively by water, adding a unique charm to the exploration of the fortress. Visitors can reach the site by boat, departing from Svinița or other riverside villages, while enjoying the spectacular scenery of the Danube Gorge. Although there is no developed tourist infrastructure in the area, the fortress offers an authentic experience, ideal for history and nature enthusiasts. Its proximity to the Iron Gates Natural Park enhances the attraction, turning a visit into a journey through the medieval past of the region.
