Despre acest obiectiv
## A Legendary Oasis in the Călimani Mountains The Twelve Apostles Nature Reserve rises along the crest of the Călimani Mountains, at the watershed between the Neagra Șarului and Poiana Negri streams. Located within the Dorna Candrenilor commune and part of the Călimani National Park, this 200-hectare protected area shelters a unique rocky landscape, sculpted by natural forces and rich in symbolism. ## Stone Sculptures and Ancestral Myths The twelve monumental rock formations, shaped by volcanic activity and millennia of erosion, have given rise to spectacular forms: towers, obelisks, pillars, and figures that evoke human or animal silhouettes. The most famous group, the "Twelve Apostles," includes formations named with suggestive titles such as *The Old Man*, *The Marshal*, *The Martyr*, and *Harla’s Gate*. The *Old Man* rock impresses with its three "faces," each oriented in a different direction: one brachycephalic toward the east, another dolichocephalic toward the south, and a third with sharp features toward the north. Local legends link these rocks to the ancient Pelasgians, whom historian Nicolae Densușianu claimed erected them in honor of deities. In Orthodox folklore, they are often associated with religious symbols, reinforcing their mystical aura. On the western slope, juniper thickets shelter another natural monument: the *birch rooster*, a rare and fascinating species. ## Access and Exploration Routes The reserve can be accessed from several points. The shortest route starts from Gura Haitii (blue dot trail, 5 km, approximately 2 hours of ascent). From Poiana Negrii, the path is longer (blue dot trail, 11 km, 4-5 hours), while from Vatra Dornei, the ridge trail (blue triangle then red dot markers) takes about 9 hours. Regardless of the chosen route, the rocky landscape and history-laden atmosphere make the Twelve Apostles a memorable destination for nature and legend enthusiasts.
