Despre acest obiectiv
## Valchid Fortified Church – A Symbol of Faith and Rural Resilience Nestled in the heart of Valchid village, part of Hoghilag commune, the fortified church stands as one of the most valuable testimonies of religious and defensive heritage in Sibiu County. Built in the 16th century during the height of Ottoman invasions, this sanctuary harmoniously combines its spiritual function with that of a refuge for the local community, reflecting the ingenuity and tenacity of the Transylvanian Saxons. ## Architecture and Defensive Features The church, constructed in the late Gothic style, preserves distinctive traits of Saxon ecclesiastical architecture. Its rectangular nave, vaulted with cross-ribbed arches, and the massive bell tower added later dominate the village skyline. Thick walls equipped with battlements and loopholes, along with the fortified enclosure featuring corner towers, demonstrate the adaptation to the defensive needs of the era. The interior houses a valuable ensemble of mural paintings and ecclesiastical furnishings from the 16th to 18th centuries, including a Baroque altar and a restored organ. ## Access and Visiting The Valchid Fortified Church is located approximately 20 km northwest of Mediaș, along county road DJ142E. Access is easy by car or public transport, as the village is connected to the local bus network. Visitors can explore the church during service hours or by prior arrangement with the Hoghilag commune council. Guided tours offered by locals reveal fascinating stories about the community’s life and the church’s role in defending the village over the centuries. A stop here is an opportunity to discover the authenticity of rural Transylvania, far from the tourist crowds.
