Despre acest obiectiv
## A Jewel of Maramureș Heritage The Wooden Church of Budești Josani, built in 1643, is one of the most valuable examples of religious architecture in Maramureș. Dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the church impresses with its bold structure for the time, combining traditional local elements with Western Gothic influences. Its rectangular plan and polygonal apse are complemented by a unique tower in the region, surrounded by four smaller turrets—a distinctive feature that aligns it with the Gothic style. ## Architecture and Symbolism The construction stands out for its balanced proportions and ingenious structural details, characteristic of Maramureș craftsmen. The bell tower, with its four lateral turrets, suggests an influence from the fortified churches of Transylvania, though adapted to local traditions. Wood, the primary material, was masterfully crafted to ensure the building’s durability over centuries. The interior, painted in 1762 by Alexandru Ponehalschi, astonishes with its meticulous miniatures, featuring biblical scenes and decorative motifs of remarkable finesse. ## Cultural Treasure and Visitor Access Beyond its artistic value, the church houses exceptional historical relics, such as the chainmail shirt and helmet of Pintea the Haiduc, symbols of the struggle for freedom in Maramureș. Included in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1999, the Budești Josani church is open to visitors year-round, with seasonal hours. Access is via a paved road from the village center, and nearby tourist facilities are available. A visit here offers not only a journey into the region’s history and spirituality but also a living lesson in folk architecture.
