Despre acest obiectiv
## A Jewel of Post-Byzantine Art in Maramureș The Wooden Church of Desești, built in 1770, is one of the most valuable examples of religious architecture in Maramureș. Located in the heart of the eponymous village, it is dedicated to "Saint Parascheva" and impresses with its robust structure, constructed from thick, polished oak beams, a characteristic feature of the region. Over time, the church has been studied by specialists, including Victor Brătulescu, who documented its iconic frescoes. ## Exceptional Mural Painting The interior of the church preserves an artistic treasure: its mural paintings, executed in the post-Byzantine style specific to the 18th century. These cover the walls of the nave, narthex, and altar, attributed to masters Bacinschi Andrei, Zugrav Radu Munteanu, and Gheorghe. The biblical scenes are remarkably complex, illustrating the Last Judgment, the Old and New Testaments, the Passion Cycle, and representations of various nations—Jews, Turks, Tatars, Germans, and Franks—with authentic cultural and sartorial details. The fires of Hell and the torments of sinners are depicted with an expressiveness that captivates the viewer, transforming the church into a veritable museum of faith and folk art. ## Brief Visitor’s Guide The church is located in the center of Desești village, accessible via county road DJ186, approximately 20 kilometers from Sighetu Marmației. In the churchyard, visitors can also admire the traditional Maramureș cemetery, as well as an octagonal structure covered with shingles, used for services during the summer. Recognized as a national historic monument and included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999, the church is open to the public, offering an authentic glimpse into the spirituality and craftsmanship of Maramureș. It is recommended to visit during the warm season, when natural light highlights the details of the mural paintings.
