Despre acest obiectiv
## A Wooden Jewel in the Heart of Maramureș The Wooden Church of Poienile Izei stands proudly in the eponymous village, ranking among the oldest and most valuable religious constructions in Maramureș. Built over four centuries ago on the site of an even older place of worship, the church preserves the region’s architectural tradition, blending simplicity of form with remarkable iconographic richness. Included on the UNESCO World Heritage list and declared a national historic monument, it symbolizes the spirituality and folk craftsmanship of Maramureș. ## Architecture and Centuries-Old Symbols The structure impresses with its traditional design, characteristic of wooden churches in northern Romania. The main body, built on a rectangular plan, extends into a narrower, square altar—a feature found in very old places of worship. The roof, with its two rows of eaves and conical tower, gives the church a distinctive silhouette, while the wood, its primary material, adds a touch of authenticity and warmth. The interior painting, completed in 1794 by artist Gheorghe of Dragomirești, follows the post-Byzantine style, celebrated for its vibrant colors and intricate scenes. ## Exceptional Frescoes and Iconography The church walls house some of Maramureș’s most valuable frescoes. The central theme is the *Last Judgment*, a detailed and expressive depiction considered one of the most complex in the region. Alongside it, scenes from the *Life and Passion of Jesus* appear, as well as a unique image in the area: *Jesus transformed into a pelican*, feeding its young with the blood of its own heart—a symbol of sacrifice and divine love. The vivid colors and balanced compositions make the church’s paintings an artistic and spiritual treasure. ## Quick Guide for Visitors The church is located in the center of Poienile Izei village, accessible via county road DJ186, approximately 30 kilometers from Sighetu Marmației. Visiting hours are flexible, but it is recommended to contact the local priest or town hall to confirm availability. Entry is free, though donations for the monument’s upkeep are welcome. Visitors are asked to respect the quiet and maintain cleanliness to protect this unique heritage. A stop here is a journey through time, offering an authentic perspective on Maramureș’s traditions and faith.
