Despre acest obiectiv
## Zănoaga Lake – The Glacial Jewel of the Retezat Mountains Zănoaga Lake lies hidden in the heart of Retezat National Park, within the glacial cirque of Judele Peak, on the southern slope of Șesele Mountain. Situated at an altitude of 1,997 meters, it is the deepest glacial lake in Romania, with a maximum depth of 29 meters. Its modest-sized mirror of water (360 meters long and 260 meters wide) reflects the grandeur of the alpine landscape, dominated by sharp ridges and coniferous forests. The lake's formation dates back to the last glacial era, when glaciers sculpted the valleys and mountain cirques of the Retezat. Although there are no historical documents attesting to the first observations of the lake, its presence has always been linked to the lives of local communities, who considered it a valuable natural resource. In the 20th century, the lake was stocked with indigenous trout, rainbow trout, and whitefish fry, becoming a popular attraction for passionate anglers. Fishing is permitted only between May 1 and September 14 to protect the fragile ecosystem of the area. ## Access and Hiking Trails To reach Zănoaga Lake, hikers have two main trails, both starting from the village of Clopotiva, Hunedoara County. The first trail follows the course of the Mare River, passing through Gura Apei and Zlata Peak (2,142 m), then descending toward the Râdeș-Zlata plateau, where it veers right toward the lake. The second trail, more challenging, ascends via the Râdeșu Mare Valley, passes by Râdeșu Mare Peak (2,261 m) and Zănoaga Peak, then follows the Zănoaga Stream to its confluence with the Judele Stream. Both routes require physical preparation and proper equipment, with the journey taking between 6 and 8 hours, depending on the chosen pace. Visitors are advised to respect the rules of Retezat National Park, avoiding camping in protected areas and maintaining cleanliness. Zănoaga Lake is an ideal destination for those seeking the tranquility of wild nature and unforgettable alpine landscapes.
