Despre acest obiectiv
## A Wild Oasis in the Heart of Piatra Craiului Zărnești Gorges represent one of the most spectacular natural formations of the Piatra Craiului Massif, located within the boundaries of the eponymous National Park, in the administrative territory of Moieciu commune. Spanning nearly 110 hectares, these gorges impress with their wild landscape, dominated by steep limestone walls and the sinuous course of the Mare River. Often referred to as the "Zărnești Chasms," they attract both hiking enthusiasts and climbers, offering trails of dramatic beauty. ## Unique Geology and Biodiversity The relief of the gorges has been shaped by karst erosion, which has sculpted vertical walls and numerous caves over time. The Mare River, the main watercourse of the area, disappears underground in certain sectors due to the permeability of the limestone rocks, only to re-emerge further downstream at the exit of the gorges. Within its hydrographic basin, 21 caves have formed, some sheltering endemic species, such as the spider *Nesticus constantinescui*, discovered here and unique in the world. This biological and geological diversity makes Zărnești Gorges a natural laboratory for researchers and a refuge for the flora and fauna specific to the mountainous region. ## Access and Recommended Activities Access to the area is possible from the localities of Zărnești, Moieciu, or Măgura, each offering starting points for trails that traverse the gorges. Hikers can explore the marked paths that wind among the steep walls or try climbing the vertical cliffs, as the area is renowned for its ideal alpinism conditions. For those seeking a quieter experience, the less frequented trails near the river provide an intimate encounter with wild nature. Adequate equipment and adherence to environmental protection rules are recommended, given the protected status of Piatra Craiului National Park.
