Sihla Monastery

A Pilgrimage Site in the Heart of Moldavia

History and Legend

While historical documents do not provide an exact founding date, oral tradition and local chronicles place the origins of Sihla Monastery in the 15th century. Legend has it that its name derives from a sihăstrie (a hermitage for ascetics) that existed here before the monastery itself was built. One of the key moments in the history of the settlement is linked to Saint Theodora of Sihla, a nun who lived in the 17th century and became a symbol of unwavering faith. Her ascetic life, spent in nearby caves, transformed the site into a spiritual landmark for Romanian Orthodoxy.

Architecture and Local Character

The current monastic complex largely dates back to the 19th century, when the monastery was rebuilt and expanded. The main church, constructed in the Neo-Byzantine style, impresses with its simplicity and sobriety, characteristic of mountain monasteries. The interior frescoes, painted in the traditional technique, preserve influences of the Moldavian school of painting, featuring vivid biblical scenes and saintly figures. Within the monastery courtyard, there is also a smaller church carved into the rock, which houses the relics of Saint Theodora. This space serves as a place of prayer and meditation, preserving the atmosphere of contemplation of the early ascetics.

To reach Sihla Monastery, visitors can follow county road DJ155C, which starts in Târgu Neamț and ascends into the mountains. The approximately 20-kilometer route offers spectacular views of the valleys and forests in the area. Upon arrival, pilgrims and tourists can explore the monastic complex, visit the caves of Saint Theodora, and hike to Stâna lui Daniil Sihastrul, another spiritually significant site. The monastery is open daily, and access is free, though donations are welcome to support the upkeep of the settlement. For those wishing to spend more time in the area, accommodation is available in the monastery’s cells or nearby guesthouses.
