ABOUT WOODEN CHURCH OF MOISEI MONASTERY
The Wooden Church of Moisei Monastery is part of the religious architectural tradition of the Maramureș region, renowned for its UNESCO-listed wooden churches. Though not included in this exclusive group, the church preserves distinctive elements of local craftsmanship, reflecting the synthesis between spirituality and the skill of regional artisans. Constructed in the 18th century, these wooden churches were not only places of prayer but also community hubs, standing the test of time through traditional woodworking techniques.
The structure stands out for its robust design, built from massive oak or fir beams, expertly joined to ensure stability. The steeply pitched roof, covered with shingles, is a traditional solution to protect the building from harsh weather. The bell tower, positioned above the narthex, is a characteristic feature of Maramureș churches, adding verticality and balance to the ensemble. The interior exudes a sober atmosphere, with a carved iconostasis and Byzantine-style mural paintings typical of Orthodox religious art. While the decorative details are less elaborate than those of neighboring village churches, the simplicity of form and authenticity of materials lend the site a unique beauty.
The church is located in Moisei, Maramureș County, accessible via National Road DN17, which connects the towns of Vișeu de Sus and Borșa. Visitors can reach it by car or public transport, with the bus station in the village center approximately a 10-minute walk from the monastery. Visiting hours are adapted to religious services, but access is generally permitted between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM, except during prayer times. Visitors are advised to respect the tranquility and conduct appropriate for a place of worship. Nearby, tourists can explore the mountainous landscapes of the Rodna Mountains or visit other cultural attractions in the area, such as the wooden churches of Ieud or Bârsana.
